How to tell the time

Just a heads up: Some Indonesians are still struggling to be punctual. There’s an idiom jam karet (literally means rubber band time). That’s a bad habit of being late.

I hope people can be more punctual.

Let’s read the short conversations and learn how to read the time.

What time is it?

Jam berapa sekarang?

It’s 1 o’clock.

Sekarang jam 1 tepat.

What time do you wake up?

Jam berapa kamu bangun?

I wake up at 7:30.

Saya bangun jam setengah 8.

What time is our meeting tomorrow?

Jam berapa rapat kita besok?

At 10 AM.

Jam 10 pagi.

What time will you come to my house tomorrow?

Jam berapa kamu akan datang ke rumahku besok?

At 7 PM.

Jam 7 malam.

… tepat

1:00

Jam 1 tepat.

2:00

Jam 2 tepat.

3:00

Jam 3 tepat.

lebih … menit

1:05

Jam 1 lebih 5 menit.

2:15

Jam 2 lebih 15 menit.

3:20

Jam 3 lebih 20 menit.

setengah (1/2) …

1:30

Jam setengah 2.

4:30

Jam setengah 5.

6:30

Jam setengah 7.

kurang … menit

7:35

Jam 8 kurang 25 menit.

7:45

Jam 8 kurang 15 menit.

7:59

Jam 8 kurang 1 menit.

For your info, usually a shopping mall is open every day from 10:00 AM – 9:00 PM.

In big cities, many minimarts, restaurants, and drugstores are open 24/7.

Do you have any question about time?

Please feel free to let me know in the comment.

Love,

Mama Bahasa
